The British Acupuncture Council is the UK's main regulatory body for the practice of traditional acupuncture by over 2800 professionally qualified acupuncturists. Formed in 1995, they represent the largest body of professional acupuncturists in the UK and guarantee excellence in the following areas:

  • Training Standards - entry to the profession is at three year undergraduate degree level training
  • Safe Practice - its standards are drawn up in consultation with internationally renowned experts
  • Ethical Behaviour - rules are monitored and enforced with the help of experienced practitioners and independent non-acupuncturists

The Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine was set up in 1987 to regulate the practice of Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) in the UK. The RCHM now represent over 400 fully qualified practitioners of Chinese herbal medicine.

The Register is a member of the European Herbal & Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (EHTPA), an umbrella organisation that is working towards statutory self regulation for herbal medicine in Britain.


The Acupuncture Fertility Network
The AFN is a professional special interest group for acupuncturists dedicated to supporting those with fertility issues.

AFN membership denotes a commitment to ongoing post graduate study in the areas of gynaecology and fertility, working to maintain an updated understanding of current treatment practices. Acupuncture treatment can be beneficial for:

• “unexplained infertility”
• pre-conception care
• assisted conception support
• low sperm parameters: count, motility, morphology
• PCOS
• endometriosis
• ovulation issues
• menstrual cycle irregularities
• recurrent miscarriage

Middlesex Univeristy BSc.TCM

The BSc.(Hons) Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) course at Middlesex University was the first named degree of its kind in the world outside China. Since its establishment in 1996, the course has been running successfully for more than 10 years, with students from many countries successfully graduating students as TCM practitioners.
